What experience is needed?It is highly recommended that you complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory course beforehand or have an equivalent level of theoretical knowledge. This is a practical sailing course for sailors who have previous sailing experience and an understanding of the theory behind the practice. Your experienced and knowledgeable Go-Sail.je instructor will teach you the practical skills to compliment your existing theoretical knowledge. What to expect:This practical sailing course is designed to teach you to 'Take Charge' safely and confidently. A Day Skipper does much more than just navigate. They are responsible for the complete safety at sea and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling the boat, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, chart reading, watch keeping, dealing with emergencies, GPS navigation and pilotage.
You will put your knowledge and sailing techniques into practice as you skipper the yacht on passages around the Channel Islands and adjacent coast of France. There is particular emphasis on boat handling and sail trim for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions. Students live aboard for the duration of the 5 day course and visit many different harbours and anchorages in the Channel Islands and France to practice navigation skills, pilotage techniques which, like boat handling, are essential skills for the aspiring skipper. You will complete a night sail passage to experience night pilotage and identify lights. You are required to cook some meals onboard, food onboard is included in the course fee. However, as we visit both the other Channel Islands and France, we also dine ashore in a local restaurant at least once during the course.
