RYA Competent Crew 

Come sail the finest cruising grounds in Northern Europe upon one of our residential sailing courses, starting and finishing in Jersey. Take in the breath taking scenery, enjoy the pleasant weather, spot dolphins, all whilst learning how to sail. Not only is Jersey the sunniest spot in the UK but it also easy to get to from the UK with short and frequent direct flights from all major UK airports. All this and conveniently English speaking. Nearer to France but closer to home.

The essential starting point for your RYA training. The course introduces the absolute beginner to the delights of sailing aboard a cruising yacht. It is also an ideal stepping stone for dinghy sailors to try yachting and for those who have already done some crewing but wish to learn more. At the end of the 5 day course you will have become, as the name suggests, a competent (and confident) member of the crew. 

What experience is needed?

No previous knowledge or experience is required to join this course.

What to expect:

You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as

• tying knots
• nautical terms
• sail handling 
• helming 
• how to "live" aboard a cruising yacht
• safety procedures (including man overboard recovery techniques)
• night time sailing

During the course you will spend 5 days and 4 nights living and sleeping aboard the yacht, visiting many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages of the Channel Islands and adjacent coast of France.  You are required to cook some meals onboard, food onboard is included in the course fee.  However, as we visit the other Channel Islands and France, we also dine ashore in a local restaurant at least once during the course. There is the option to choose a split weekend course, consisting of a 2 day weekend followed by a 3 day weekend, meaning you only need to take a single day off work. 

Our student to instructor ratio is 4:1, this allows your Go-sail.je instructor to devote plenty of time to your individual needs.
