RYA Coastal Skipper Complete
Come sail the finest cruising grounds in Northern Europe upon one of our residential sailing courses, starting and finishing in Jersey. Take in the breath taking scenery, enjoy the pleasant weather, spot dolphins, all whilst learning how to sail. Not only is Jersey the sunniest spot in the UK but it also easy to get to from the UK with short and frequent direct flights from all major UK airports. All this and conveniently English speaking. Nearer to France but closer to home.
This package combines the RYA Coastal Skipper theory and practical courses enabling you to safely skipper a yacht on longer coastal and offshore passages by day and night.
What experience is needed?
At least 15 days at sea, 8 hours night sailing and 300 nautical miles sailed with at least 2 days as skipper. Navigation theory to the level of Day Skipper and boat handling to the level of Day Skipper.
What to expect:
During the whole package you will be living and sleeping aboard the yacht, visiting many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages of the Channel Islands and the adjacent coast of France. During the practical course you are required to cook some meals onboard, food onboard is included in the course fee. However, as we visit both the other Channel Islands and France, we also dine ashore in a local restaurant at least once during the practical course. Meals are not included during the theory course, however, you are welcome to use the facilities aboard or dine out as you wish.
RYA Coastal Skipper Theory
The course starts in the Go-Sail.je classroom for 6 days to study navigation, the collision regulations, meteorology, passage making, tidal calculations, chart work, position fixing, electronic aids to navigation and environmental guidance for boat users. You'll then be ready to take the RYA Coastal Skipper Theory assessments and head out on the water to complete the practical course.
RYA Coastal Skipper Practical
You will put into practice your newly acquired theory knowledge as you skipper the yacht on passages around the Channel Islands and adjacent coast of France. Skippering a yacht on coastal and offshore passages demands strong navigation, seamanship and leadership skills. During the course your instructor will guide you through navigation, both offshore and in limited visibility, weather forecasting and passage planning, watch keeping, preparation for sea and handling heavy weather. You will put this all into practice as each student plans and executes passages taking complete command of the yacht. Weather permitting the yacht will undertake a longer coastal passage.
Upon successful completion of the 2 courses you will be awarded with your RYA Coastal Skipper Theory and RYA Coastal Skipper certificates. There is no longer a distinction between tidal and non-tidal courses.
