Frequently asked membership questionsWill a boat always be available?
We strictly limit & review our member numbers vs number of vessels regularly to insure good availability across our fleet. As our membership grows, so too does our fleet. We’d love to say that we can guarantee a vessel will always be available, but the reality is that it may not be – especially at peak times like Bank Holiday weekends or during Round the Island. We recommend that you book early to ensure you get a date you would particularly like - such as a family birthday or other special events. Also, we’d really appreciate it if you can remember to cancel a booking when you don’t need it. If all vessels are booked at a time you would like, please let us know and we’ll do our best to make a vessel available for you.
Is there a joining fee?
For Tier 2 & Tier 3 members there is a one off, non-refundable onboarding fee of £1500. This fee covers all the joining admin, acquaint trips & vessel familiarisation required for our insurance. Should a membership be cancelled a member will be required to pay another onboarding fee should they wish to re-join at a later date.
Do I need to have experience to join the Club?
Whilst you do need minimum qualifications & experience to drive one of our vessels, you do not need experience to join our Boat Club. Go-Sail.je is a RYA Training Centre and able to provide full training to gain the qualifications required. The RYA’s Powerboat Level 2 certificate is the minimum qualification (2 day course) required for our motor boats & RYA Day Skipper (5 day course) is required for our Yachts. An important perk of your membership is your discounts on our in house RYA training courses. Member support does not stop there! Our members benefit from a WhatsApp community where they are free to discuss all things boaty whilst still having 24/7 free support from our team.
Do I need insurance?
Go-Sail.je vessels are insured for ‘bareboat’ charter which covers you, your party, and the vessel itself, whilst on board. However, an excess would be payable in event of damage that required an insurance claim. Excess details for each vessel can be found in the member information pack which you will receive before joining.
Am I expected to clean vessels after use?
After use, we ask is that you give the vessel a quick spray off at the end of your day to remove salt, sand & any dirt. Go-Sail vessels are cleaned weekly by a 3rd party contractor. Hose pipes can be found within La Collette marina upon your return to St Helier. Should vessels be found left in an untidy state or rubbish left aboard, Go-Sail may impose an additional cleaning fee.
Are there member events or trips?
Absolutely! The Go-Sail boat club aims to be an open forum for like minded boaters & we encourage members to discuss their trips & knowledge progress on our WhatsApp Community. We hold short bi-weekly training sessions which are free of charge to members as well as run rally's & member events throughout the season.
Can I use the RIB overnight?
members are allowed to book a maximum of 2 consecutive days for overnight trips away in the other islands & France. However, we do not permit the use of motorboats during hours of darkness. Hours of darkness consist of 30 mins before sunrise to 30 mins after sunset. Yachts are permitted to be used for overnight passages following review of passage plans by our management team.
Can I be a joint member with friends or family
No, Unfortunately Tier 1 & Tier 2 membership are per a named individual who must remain 'in charge' of the vessel at all times.
How far can i take the boats?
Our vessels are licensed & insured for up to 20 nautical miles from a safe haven. this includes the entirety of the Channel Islands and the adjacent coast of France. Yachts must not proceed North of Alderney or South of Brest & Motorboats must not proceed North of Alderney, West of Guernsey & West of St Cast when transiting the French coast.
What happens if the vessel breaks down or i have an issue?
Our vessels are maintained to a high standard as well as modern & equipped with all the necessary safety equipment. During your induction you will be shown & asked to demonstrate, sound knowledge of all safety aspects of each vessel. If you have a mechanical breakdown or an issue whilst afloat you must inform our management team. if the situation is an emergency, you must in the first instance inform Jersey Coastguard on VHF Channel 82 or in an emergency VHF Channel 16. They will decide if the situation requires an emergency response or a Lifeboat for assistance. If the situation is safe and manageable our team endeavour to respond to members within the hour.
How many people can i take out?
Our vessels are commercially licensed and therefore, have a maximum capacity. This capacity number MUST NOT at anytime be exceed unless in an emergency whilst aiding other mariners. Members found to have passengers onboard that exceed the permitted number will be in breach of our membership contract and will have their membership revoked with immediate notice.
How do you regulate fuel use?
Vessels are provided to members with full fuel tanks. Although, during peak times this may not be possible for back to back member use. We ask that members return the vessel having re-fueled tanks to the brim. In the eventuality that this is not possible than we may re-fuel a vessel ourselves and charge members the cost of fuel added only. If a member receives a vessel that is not full then please take note of the 'fuel used' figure on the engine gauge before & after use.
What if another member DAMAGES the vessel but it is not noticed till my use?
Our team check each vessel prior to & after each use. Should the vessel get damaged we request that members are open and honest so that we can repair the damage in a timely and cost effective manor. After all, Accidents do happen. Members are asked to carry out a pre-departure check ahead of use which includes highlighting any damage onboard. Please take pictures of any damage our team may not have spotted ahead of use and inform us at the earliest convenience.
What safety equipment is onboard?
Our vessels are fully licensed with he MCA & Ports of jersey for commercial use. They undergo annual safety inspections of both the vessel itself & safety equipment onboard. Therefore, Our vessels are some of the safest on the water. You will find a plethora of equipment onboard including lifejackets, life raft, flares, fire extinguishers, torches, grab bags, etc etc.
Are there any hidden costs associated with being a member?
No. We aim to offer a cost effective, transparent & hassle free membership option to boaters. Fee's consist of a monthly membership plan, a one off onboarding fee & any course you require / choose to attend above our free bi-weekly training sessions. The only additional costs you incur will be fuel used, visitor marina charges which island hopping & an insurance excess in the event of any damage.
can i have a membership for 6 months of the year?
No. Unfortunately membership plans are based on a 1 year contract which will renew 1 year after your start date. we do not offer less than 1 year contracts to individual members. This keeps membership fair.
Do i get charged for a booking i DIDN'T use or CANCELLED at short notice?
Our membership is based on unlimited use but is priced according the average use we expect from each member. Should you wish to cancel a booking or find you can't use the boat on the day, please inform our team or post on the members WhatsApp group to inform other members that the boat then remains available. Members found to be making bookings & not using them maybe restricted from making bookings in advance.
How quickly can i become a member?
Providing you hold the appropriate qualifications you can be using our boats the same day as you sign onto a membership. Joining members that don't hold qualifications may still hire one our skippers to take them out on the water ahead of their training course.
