RYA Day Skipper
Come sail the finest cruising grounds in Northern Europe upon one of our residential sailing courses, starting and finishing in Jersey. Take in the breath taking scenery, enjoy the pleasant weather, spot dolphins, all whilst learning how to sail. Not only is Jersey the sunniest spot in the UK but it also easy to get to from the UK with short and frequent direct flights from all major UK airports. All this and conveniently English speaking. Nearer to France but closer to home.
This practical course is designed to teach you to "Take Charge" safely and confidently. A skipper does much more than just navigate. They are responsible for the complete safety and wellbeing of the yacht and crew. These responsibilities include weather forecasting, victualling the boat, engine maintenance, sail selection and handling, passage planning, watch keeping, dealing with emergencies, navigation and pilotage.
What experience is needed?
It is recommended that you complete the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course beforehand or have an equivalent level of theoretical knowledge. This is a practical course for sailors who have previous sailing experience and an understanding of the theory behind the practice. Your experienced and knowledgeable Go-Sail.je instructor will teach you the practical skills to compliment your existing theoretical knowledge.
What to expect:
You will put your knowledge into practice as you skipper the yacht on passages around the Channel Islands and adjacent coast of France. There is particular emphasis on boat handling for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions. Students live aboard for the duration of the 5 day course and visit many different harbours and anchorages in the Channel Islands and France to practice pilotage techniques which, like boat handling, are essential skills for the aspiring skipper. You will complete a night sailing passage to experience night pilotage and identify lights. You are required to cook some meals onboard, food onboard is included in the course fee. However, as we visit both the other Channel Islands and France, we also dine ashore in a local restaurant at least once during the course. There is the option to choose a split weekend course, consisting of a 2 day weekend followed by a 3 day weekend, meaning you only need to take a single day off work.
Our student to instructor ratio is 4:1, this allows your Go-Sail.je instructor to devote plenty of time to your individual needs.
