Novice to RYA Day Skipper
Come sail the finest cruising grounds in Northern Europe upon one of our residential sailing courses, starting and finishing in Jersey. Take in the breath taking scenery, enjoy the pleasant weather, spot dolphins, all whilst learning how to sail. Not only is Jersey the sunniest spot in the UK but it also easy to get to from the UK with short and frequent direct flights from all major UK airports. All this and conveniently English speaking. Nearer to France but closer to home.
This back to back package combines 3 RYA courses providing you with the fastest way to become qualified to charter bareboat sailing yachts all over the world. This course offers the very best value for money and is the fastest route to gaining the complete RYA Day Skipper qualification.
What experience is needed?
Although no prior experience is required, many people who take this option already know that they will love being on a yacht.
What to expect:
During the whole package you will be living and sleeping aboard the yacht, visiting many of the beautiful harbours and anchorages of the Channel Islands and the adjacent coast of France.
During the practical courses you are required to cook some meals onboard, food onboard is included in the course fee. However, as we visit both the other Channel Islands and France, we also dine ashore in a local restaurant at least once during each of the practical courses. Meals are not included during the theory course, however, you are welcome to use the facilities aboard or dine out as you wish.
RYA Competent Crew
You will be taught the fundamentals of crewing such as knots, nautical terms, sail handling, and helming. Safety procedures including man overboard recovery and the collision regulations will be introduced to you. Your newly acquired and first hand experience of how a yacht is skippered readies you to start learning how to become a skipper yourself.
RYA Day Skipper Theory
Now that you're hungry to learn more after your first 5 days afloat it is into the Go-Sail.je classroom for 4 days to study navigation theory, tidal calculations, chart reading, basic meteorology, collision regulations and electronic aids to navigation. You'll then be ready to take the RYA Day Skipper Theory tests and head back out on to the water to complete the practical course.
RYA Day Skipper Practical
You will put into practice your newly acquired experience and theory knowledge as you skipper the yacht on passages around the Channel Islands and adjacent coast of France. There is particular emphasis on boat handling for Day Skippers and during the course you will practice mooring under various conditions. You will practice pilotage techniques which, like boat handling, are essential skills for the aspiring skipper. You will also complete a night sailing passage to experience night pilotage and identify lights.
Upon successful completion of the 3 courses you will be awarded with your RYA Competent Crew, RYA Day Skipper Theory and RYA Day Skipper practical certificates. There is no longer a distinction between tidal and non-tidal courses.
